Layers of Time Kyokusho Museum, Gifu
Dates: May 12 – June 9, 2024
This solo exhibition, held in the spring of 2024 at Gifu's Kyokusho Museum, explored the themes of time and memory through a quiet, immersive space.
On the facing walls, layered tree rubbings (jutaku) were printed onto ultra-thin handmade washi paper. Delicate sheets of washi hung from the ceiling, while on the floor, rubbings and fading rose petals were carefully arranged, creating a space where the passage of time could be felt through the body.
Near the window stood a tower-like structure made of 588 daily rubbings from the ongoing TIME project. Arranged in 7 columns, 4 rows, and 21 tiers, the installation embodied the material accumulation of time.
During the exhibition, a performance by Juri Nishio took place. Moving in slow motion, she gently tore transparent washi as she walked. The sound and movement extended each moment, offering visitors a quiet encounter with their own sense of time.
